7th Annual OSH Group Shed Hunt
The Annual OSH Group Shed Hunt has once again come and gone. Troy and I would like to extend a huge thank you to everybody that was able to make the 7th Annual Event. We had folks from all over the state including Central Oregon areas, Eugene, Salem, Coos Bay, Medford, Portland, Tillamook, Scappoose, Klamath Falls and Burns. In total we had about 50 people attend the event and the final shed count came in around 75 sheds, which was amazing about half as many as last year’s final tally of 143. This was our third year in this location and I think most people enjoyed the area, but I think we will try a new camp spot next year, even if it’s in the same general hunting area.
A few folks showed up Thursday evening and got the event started early. I drove down Friday morning and didn’t even make it to camp before I ran into CameraGuy, Hornhog and Chuxmydog and was talked into joining them for a ‘quick’ hike. You know how those go; gotta see what’s over the next ridge…it ended up being several hours. The weather was absolutely perfect and the first shed of the event was found about 30 minutes into the hike by Hornhog’s daughter, Payton. Several more were found by Chuxmydog’s daughter, Alissa, in the next couple hours. The kids were on fire!
Saturday the weather once again cooperated and allowed us to gather up several more sheds. In the early afternoon, OSP Trooper Hayes showed up and ‘planted’ several deer and elk sheds around the campground area for the kids to find. Consequently several kids “found” their first sheds! Next year we’re thinking about having a kids course with planted sheds, so if you have chalk or sheds you’d like to donate let us know.
Around 4 p.m. most of the group met back at camp and OSH gave out prizes to the male, female and youth who found the biggest, smallest, biggest set, smallest set, biggest chalk, biggest 3 point, etc. The biggest shed award for female went to a woman that found a monster 7 point, her first shed ever. We had several other hunters that found their first mule deer shed, first matching set or set a personal best for total sheds in a day. Everybody that attended the prize ceremony went home with a prize. Prizes included 2 custom framed photos compliments of Camera Guy’s Photography, Danner, Leupold, Nosler hats, Danner flashlights, t-shirts, boot grease, and socks, ShedChik apparel , Work Sharp Knife and Tool Sharpener, and much more. CameraGuy and his wife Gayle were presented with a special ‘$200 Thank You Award’ for all their support to OSH and keeping the website up and running over the past seven years. Hornhog was also recognized as a major contributor to OSH and recently getting the OSH Facebook fan page going. We truly appreciate all their help and couldn’t keep OSH running without their devoted assistance!
After the prizes were all awarded some folks had to hit the road while the rest of us sat around CameraGuy’s well known, extra, extra large campfire. CW, Devil’s Guards and Purdy teeth kept the party alive with a little Saturday Night Circus entertainment. Be sure to catch the video that Hornhog put together of this daredevil stunt show! Last year they were also the entertainment of the party, so I think we can count on those boys to bring the entertainment in the upcoming years! It was a great evening.
Sunday morning we awoke to 2 inches of snow which put a damper on most everybody’s shed hunt. What a great weekend of fun it was though! Troy and I met a lot of great people and truly appreciate everybody’s support. Thanks also to our sponsors for helping make the event a success! We look forward to the 8th Annual Group Hunt next year!
